Summary: U.S. visas for professional triathletes: who files when prize money is the pay, IRONMAN, T100 and World Triathlon rankings, P-1A, O-1A and EB-1A.

##### Sports Immigration

This page is for professional triathletes who race in the United States, for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) triathletes turning professional, and for the coaches who travel with them. The visas are explained on the firm's [P-1A](/temporary-visas/p-1-visa/), [O-1](/temporary-visas/o-1-visa/) and [EB-1A for athletes](/eb-1a-green-card-athletes/) pages; below is what triathlon adds. Altius Immigration Law is led by André Matias, an Olympian, and handles visas for triathletes and the coaches who travel with them.

## Three professional structures, and the end of T100 contracts

Triathlon's U.S. racing runs through three structures.

- **IRONMAN Pro Series.** The 2026 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, on October 10 carries a professional prize purse of 375,000 U.S. dollars, and ends the 2026 Pro Series points season ([IRONMAN, 2026 women's start list](https://www.ironman.com/stories/pro-elite/start-list-2026-ironman-world-championship-womens-race-kailua-kona)). The 2027 Pro Series schedule includes IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside (April 3), IRONMAN Texas (April 24), IRONMAN 70.3 Pennsylvania Happy Valley (May 23), the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga (August 28 to 29) and Kona (October 9) ([IRONMAN, Pro Series schedule](https://www.ironman.com/proseries/pro-series-schedule)).
- **T100 Triathlon World Tour.** For 2026, "Athlete contracts are no more – meaning there's no guaranteed payday for any of the pros"; each race carries a prize purse of 275,000 U.S. dollars per gender instead, and each race has 20 athletes per gender ([T100, pro racing](https://t100triathlon.com/pro-racing/)). The 2026 U.S. race was the Sokin T100 San Francisco, a men's-only race on June 6 (same page). The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO), whose site presents the T100 as its professional racing, describes itself as "an organisation co-owned by professional athletes" ([PTO](https://www.protriathletes.org/)). The PTO also publishes the PTO World Rankings covered below.
- **World Triathlon.** The international federation, runs the World Triathlon Championship Series, World Cups and World Championships, and publishes World Rankings ([World Triathlon](https://www.triathlon.org/about)). Which of the three an athlete races in shapes what the petition has to show.

## When a B-1 is enough

A foreign-based pro flying in for one race may not need a work visa. Under the State Department's Foreign Affairs Manual, a pro whose only U.S. money from the race is prize money can travel on a B-1 if the pro's "principal place of business or activity is in a foreign country" and salary "principally accrues in a foreign country" ([9 FAM 402.2-5(C)(4)](https://fam.state.gov/fam/09FAM/09FAM040202.html)). A U.S. sponsor's appearance fee or U.S. coaching income is a U.S.-source payment other than prize money, so on that wording it rules out the B-1.

## Who files the petition

A pro paid in prize money may have no U.S. employer, and the athlete cannot be the petitioner; the [P-1A page](/temporary-visas/p-1-visa/) lists who can. For a racer without an employer, one route under the P-1 regulation is a U.S. agent, who files with "a complete itinerary of services or engagements" naming each race's date, employer and venue ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(2)(iv)(E)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)), and must show U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that it is "authorized to act as an agent for all of your employers" ([USCIS, P-1A Athlete](https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-workers/p-1a-athlete)). Altius does not act as an agent petitioner itself; it works with agent-petitioner services and can refer you to one.

One individual-athlete petition can carry a multi-year race schedule. The regulation treats a tournament, a season or "a group of related activities" as one event ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(3)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)); approval can run "up to 5 years" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(8)(iii)(A)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)) and be extended for up to 5 more, 10 years in total ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(14)(ii)(A)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)); and the petitioner "may add additional, similar or comparable performance, engagements, or competitions" without an amended petition ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(2)(iv)(D)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).

## Which visa fits which person

- **P-1A.** The individual-athlete petition starts with a contract "if such contracts are normally executed in the sport" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)(1)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)); with T100 contracts gone in 2026, the petition has to explain how the sport pays. The athlete also needs at least two of seven evidence items, among them international competition with a national team, a ranking "if the sport has international rankings", and a statement "from an official of the governing body of the sport" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)(2)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
- **O-1A** or the **EB-1A** green card for an athlete or coach whose own record is the stronger evidence; see [O-1](/temporary-visas/o-1-visa/) and [EB-1A for athletes](/eb-1a-green-card-athletes/).
- **P-1S (essential support)** for a coach, physiotherapist or bike mechanic who is "an integral part of the performance" and performs services "which cannot be readily performed by a United States worker" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(3)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)). Each needs a separate petition with its own consultation and a statement of "prior essentiality, critical skills, and experience" with the athlete ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(iv)(B)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)). Staff paid abroad by a foreign-based athlete may fit the State Department's B-1 list of "necessary personnel", which names "coaching staff", "medical support staff" and "mechanics" ([9 FAM 402.2-5(C)(4)](https://fam.state.gov/fam/09FAM/09FAM040202.html)).

## Three rankings to explain

Triathlon evidence comes from three ranking systems, so the petition should say which one reflects the athlete's racing and how it is calculated.

- **PTO World Rankings**, which the PTO publishes for men and women ([PTO](https://www.protriathletes.org/)) and from whose top 30 the T100 fills eight places in each 20-athlete race ([T100, pro racing](https://t100triathlon.com/pro-racing/)).
- **IRONMAN Pro Series points**, with "a maximum of 6,000 points available" at the 2026 World Championship ([IRONMAN, 2026 women's start list](https://www.ironman.com/stories/pro-elite/start-list-2026-ironman-world-championship-womens-race-kailua-kona)).
- **World Triathlon World Rankings** ([World Triathlon](https://www.triathlon.org/about)).

## Where Kona's professionals come from

Counted from the pro start lists IRONMAN published for the 2026 World Championship in Kona, 49 of the 56 men listed and 47 of the 54 women listed race for a country other than the United States ([IRONMAN, men's start list](https://www.ironman.com/stories/pro-elite/start-list-2026-ironman-world-championship-mens-race-kailua-kona); [women's start list](https://www.ironman.com/stories/pro-elite/start-list-2026-ironman-world-championship-womens-race-kailua-kona)). On those 2026 start lists, Germany (8), France (7) and the United States (7) have the most men, and the United Kingdom (9), Germany (8) and the United States (7) the most women. For those athletes, the B-1 and P-1A rules above decide how they may race in the United States.

## College to professional

USA Triathlon records that women's triathlon became "an NCAA Emerging Sport for Women in 2014" ([USA Triathlon, NCAA triathlon](https://www.usatriathlon.org/multisport/ncaa-triathlon)). The NCAA reported "42 institutions sponsoring the sport in 2025-26", and Conference Carolinas becomes the first NCAA conference to sponsor it from fall 2026, with seven institutions ([NCAA, May 4, 2026](http://www.ncaa.org/media-center-conference-carolinas-announces-the-addition-of-womens-triathlon/)). In the NCAA's demographics data for 2024-25, 37 of 362 women's triathletes across all divisions were international, down from 48 of 305 in 2023-24 ([NCAA demographics spreadsheet, published September 2025](https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/research/demographics/data/RES_DemographicsSpreadsheetSport.xlsx)).

For a former NCAA triathlete, college racing can supply the P-1A's evidence item for having competed "to a significant extent in a prior season for a U.S. college or university in intercollegiate competition" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)(2)(iii)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)). After college, a step up can come through World Triathlon racing or long-course prize-money racing; a T100 race place, for example, comes from the T100 standings, a top-30 PTO World Ranking or a wildcard ([T100, pro racing](https://t100triathlon.com/pro-racing/)). If you are in the United States on an F-1 student visa, tell us before your first paid U.S. race, so the right work permission is in place first.

## The consultation letter

A P-1 petition needs a written advisory opinion, or a letter of no objection, from a labor organization with expertise in the sport, unless none exists ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(7)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)); a statement from the sport's governing body is separate evidence and does not replace it. USA Triathlon is the U.S. national governing body on the list of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee ([U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, national governing bodies](https://www.usopc.org/NGB-IMS)), and World Triathlon is the international federation; either can supply that statement. USCIS's index of consultation sources has no triathlon entry as of its September 11, 2026 update, and USCIS says the index "is not an exhaustive list" ([USCIS, Address Index for I-129 O and P Consultation Letters](https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-workers/address-index-for-i-129-o-and-p-consultation-letters)). The PTO is athlete-owned but does not describe itself as a labor organization ([PTO](https://www.protriathletes.org/)). USCIS states that where no appropriate labor organization exists, the consultation requirement "is excused" ([USCIS, P-1A Athlete](https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-workers/p-1a-athlete); [8 CFR 214.2(p)(7)(i)(F)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).

## Pitfalls specific to triathlon

- **Training between races.** The event definition covers "short vacations" and "stopovers which are incidental and/or related to the activity" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(3)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)). A long U.S. training block is not named there; tell us about it before the petition is written.
- **Filing for Kona too early.** A P petition cannot be filed more than one year before "the actual need for the alien's services", so a petition built around Kona on October 9, 2027 is filed no earlier than October 2026 ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(2)(i)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
- **Adding a coach mid-season.** Essential support staff "may not be substituted at consular offices or at Ports-of-entry"; a new coach needs a new petition ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(2)(iv)(H)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
