Summary: US visas for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers and coaches: the P-1A for competition and paid cards, the O-1A for coaches, and the EB-1A green card.

##### Sports Immigration

This page is for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers, the two styles on the Olympic program, and for the coaches who train them. This page does not cover scripted professional wrestling. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) names the American Guild of Variety Artists in its consultation list for "sports-people appearing in non-competitive entertainment shows" ([USCIS, Address Index](https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-workers/address-index-for-i-129-o-and-p-consultation-letters)), so an entertainment wrestler's petition goes to a different consultation body from a competitive athlete's.

For a wrestler, the categories are the [P-1A](/temporary-visas/p-1-visa/), the [O-1](/temporary-visas/o-1-visa/) and the [EB-1A green card](/eb-1a-green-card-athletes/), each explained on its own page. What follows is what wrestling adds. Altius Immigration Law is led by André Matias, an Olympian, and handles visas for wrestlers and coaches.

## How wrestling work reaches the United States

- **International championships.** United World Wrestling (UWW) holds its U23 World Championships at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on October 12 to 18, 2026 ([UWW, September 15, 2026](https://uww.org/articles/u23-world-championships-2026-entries)), the first World Championships of any age group in the U.S. since 2015 ([USA Wrestling, September 13, 2025](https://www.themat.com/news/2025/september/13/u-s-to-host-2026-u23-world-championships-in-las-vegas-and-pan-american-championships-in-iowa)).
- **Paid freestyle cards.** Real American Freestyle describes itself as "the first unscripted pro wrestling league" and lists cards in Las Vegas on October 23, 2026 and Chicago on November 28, 2026 ([Real American Freestyle, News](https://www.realamericanfreestyle.com/blog)). Each card is a separate event with its own date and city.
- **Coaching and training** at U.S. clubs, colleges and USA Wrestling's Regional Training Centers, which must hold every practice "in the international styles of wrestling only" ([USA Wrestling, Regional Training Center criteria, September 25, 2020](http://content.themat.com/CoachesCorner/RTC-criteria.pdf)).

## Which visa fits which person

- **A wrestler on a promoter's card** may fit the [P-1A](/temporary-visas/p-1-visa/): "a tendered contract in an individual sport commensurate with international recognition in that sport", plus at least two of seven evidence items ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
- **A wrestler competing unpaid** at a championship may use a B-2 visitor visa under the State Department's Foreign Affairs Manual if they are an amateur who "normally performs without remuneration" ([9 FAM 402.2-4(A)(7)](https://fam.state.gov/fam/09FAM/09FAM040202.html)). A wrestler paid only prize money, based and salaried abroad, may use a B-1 business-visitor visa ([9 FAM 402.2-5(C)(4)](https://fam.state.gov/fam/09FAM/09FAM040202.html)).
- **A coach hired by a club, training center or college** may fit the [O-1A](/temporary-visas/o-1-visa/). USCIS's O-1 guidance gives "an acclaimed athlete coming to be a coach" as a case where the fit can be unclear, and treats coaching as within the athlete's field where the work shares "skillsets, knowledge, or expertise" with the wrestling career; the P-1 guidance has no equivalent passage ([USCIS Policy Manual, Volume 2, Part M, Chapter 4](https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-2-part-m-chapter-4)).
- **A coach in a wrestler's corner** at an event can be P-1S essential support to a P-1A wrestler, on a separate petition ([USCIS, P-1A Athlete](https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-workers/p-1a-athlete)), or O-2 support to an O-1 wrestler, with "critical skills and experience with the O-1 alien" ([8 CFR 214.2(o)(4)(ii)(A)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
- **A wrestler planning to stay** may qualify for the [EB-1A green card for athletes](/eb-1a-green-card-athletes/).

### One promoter or more than one

When a wrestler works for more than one employer in the same period, each employer files its own petition ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(2)(iv)(B)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)), unless a U.S. agent files for all of them with a complete itinerary ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(2)(iv)(E)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)). Altius does not act as an agent petitioner itself; it works with agent-petitioner services and can refer you to one.

### Whether a new promotion is a qualifying event

The P-1A also asks whether the competition is at an internationally recognized level. USCIS looks at viewership, attendance, revenue, media coverage, past participation by internationally recognized athletes and "the international ranking of athletes competing" ([USCIS Policy Manual, Volume 2, Part N, Chapter 2](https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-2-part-n-chapter-2)). A promotion with a short history has to document those facts in the petition; its name alone proves nothing.

## The evidence wrestling produces

- **Olympic and World medals**, as "a significant honor or award in the sport" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)(2)(vii)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
- **National team selection** for the wrestler's own country, which answers "international competition with a national team" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)(2)(ii)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
- **UWW world rankings**, which in March 2023 drew on points from "the World Championships and the two Ranking Series events" ([UWW, March 20, 2023](https://uww.org/article/uww-releases-latest-freestyle-rankings)), under the item for athletes ranked in a sport with international rankings ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)(2)(vi)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
- **A U.S. college season.** Having taken part "to a significant extent" in a prior season of U.S. intercollegiate competition is its own evidence item ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)(2)(iii)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).
- **Letters** from a governing-body official, the sports media or a recognized expert ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(4)(ii)(B)(2)(iv) and (v)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).

## Where wrestlers come from

UWW's entry list for the 2026 U23 World Championships in Las Vegas, dated September 15, 2026 and marked "subject to change", holds 639 entries from 64 nations across the three styles. The United States entered 31; India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Türkiye and Ukraine entered 30 each; Iran entered 20; in all, 608 of the 639 entries come from outside the United States ([UWW, September 15, 2026](https://uww.org/articles/u23-world-championships-2026-entries)).

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, 26 nations won wrestling medals; Japan won 11, Iran 8 and the United States 7, by USA Wrestling's count of total medals ([USA Wrestling, August 15, 2024](https://www.themat.com/news/2024/august/15/japan-wins-olympic-wrestling-medal-count-with-11-iran-next-with-eight-usa-in-third-with-seven)).

For a foreign wrestler, this field is why national-team competition and an international ranking, two of the seven P-1A evidence items, are the natural place for a petition to start.

## Training centers, college and turning professional

USA Wrestling's Regional Training Center criteria allow "international athletes/coaches who currently represent a country other than the U.S." to attend "on a limited basis", with approval of USA Wrestling and the center, and intermittently, "to enhance national team development" ([USA Wrestling, Regional Training Center criteria](http://content.themat.com/CoachesCorner/RTC-criteria.pdf)). Attending is not a job offer. A paid coaching or training role at a center needs its own work category.

The same criteria also limit what a center can give a college wrestler with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility left, so a center is not a route to paid work while in college. The criteria allow actual and necessary travel expenses for competition; they say "No room and board, stipends, misc. expenses", and they bar employment or an offer of future employment by the center ([USA Wrestling, Regional Training Center criteria](http://content.themat.com/CoachesCorner/RTC-criteria.pdf)).

In 2024-25, the NCAA counted 14 international student-athletes among 8,926 in men's wrestling and 5 among 1,653 in women's wrestling, against 22,624 of 556,687 across all NCAA sports, where "international" means a non-citizen in the U.S. on a visa or temporary basis ([NCAA Demographics Database, published September 2025](https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/research/demographics/data/RES_DemographicsSpreadsheetSport.xlsx)).

Women's wrestling became the NCAA's 91st championship in January 2025, and the first National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships were held in Coralville, Iowa, in March 2026 ([NCAA, March 4, 2026](https://www.ncaa.org/media-center-ncaas-first-womens-wrestling-championships-what-to-know/)). After eligibility ends, paid bouts point to the P-1A, and a coaching job to the O-1A.

## Wrestling for Team USA: a sport rule, not a visa

Permanent residence is not enough to wrestle for Team USA at the Olympic Games; this is a rule of Olympic sport, not of immigration law. Under the Olympic Charter's Rule 41, as the guidelines of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee explain it, the athlete must hold U.S. citizenship and a U.S. passport, and must not have represented another country in the previous 3 years unless the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee or Panam Sports grants an exception ([United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, Rule 41 Guidelines](https://assets.contentstack.io/v3/assets/blt9e58afd92a18a0fc/blt2a25ffb2a2d8f56d/6482613f8b23a5625c05227d/Rule_41_Guidelines_US_Citizenship_Requirements_%28plus_exhibits%29.pdf)). USA Wrestling's 2026 World Team Trials are open only to athletes "eligible to represent the USA" under UWW and USA Wrestling rules before the qualifying event, and set a tie-break for when more than two athletes "who have changed their sporting nationality" each hold a number-one spot. For a wrestler who has switched nationality to join the U.S. team, that tie-break matters ([USA Wrestling, 2026 General World Team Trials Procedures](https://assets.contentstack.io/v3/assets/blteb7d012fc7ebef7f/blt1e99443a440cebc9/69dfa35edbd7d559d72f14a5/2026_General_World_Team_Trials_Procedures.pdf)).

## The consultation letter

A P-1 petition needs a written advisory opinion, or a letter of no objection, from a labor organization with expertise in the sport, unless none exists ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(7)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)); a statement from the sport's governing body is separate evidence and does not replace it. No freestyle or Greco-Roman wrestling organization is on USCIS's list of consultation sources, updated September 11, 2026; USCIS says the list "is not an exhaustive list" ([USCIS, Address Index](https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-workers/address-index-for-i-129-o-and-p-consultation-letters)). The American Guild of Variety Artists entry covers non-competitive shows, so it is not the consultation body for a competitive wrestler. Where the petitioner shows that no appropriate labor organization exists, USCIS decides a wrestler's P-1A on the evidence of record ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(7)(i)(F)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)), and a coach's O-1A can rest on an advisory opinion from one or more individual experts ([8 CFR 214.2(o)(5)(i)(A)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)).

## Pitfalls specific to wrestling

- **Short notice.** A P petition needs the contracts, or a summary of the terms of an oral agreement, and an itinerary with dates ([USCIS, P-1A Athlete](https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-workers/p-1a-athlete)); it cannot be filed more than one year before the wrestler is needed and is decided at a service center "even in emergency situations" ([8 CFR 214.2(p)(2)(i)](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/214.2)). A card announced a few weeks out leaves little room, so send us the contract and dates as soon as you have them.
- **Nationals of Iran and other countries named in the proclamation.** Proclamation 10998, effective January 1, 2026, continues the full suspension of entry for nationals of Iran and other countries, with an exception for athletes, coaches and support staff traveling "for the World Cup, Olympics, or other major sporting event as determined by the Secretary of State" ([Proclamation 10998](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/full_text/html/2025/12/19/2025-23570.html)). In the firm's reading, a promoter's card falls outside that exception unless the Secretary of State determines otherwise; whether a world championship such as the U23 Worlds counts as a "major sporting event" is also for the Secretary of State to determine.

## The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

The next Olympic Games in the United States are the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Olympic wrestling is at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Hall 2, from July 24 to 30, 2028 ([Los Angeles 2028 Olympic schedule, version 4.0, as of July 29, 2026](https://la28.org/content/dam/latwentyeight/competition-schedule-imagery/uploaded-july-29-oly-version-4-0/LA28OlympicGamesCompetitionScheduleByEventV4.0.pdf)), with six weight classes each in men's Greco-Roman, men's freestyle and women's freestyle ([Los Angeles 2028, Wrestling](https://la28.org/en/games-plan/olympics/wrestling.html)). The Olympics are named in the athlete exception to Proclamation 10998, which matters to wrestlers from the listed countries planning for those Games.

## What we need from you

- Bout agreements or offers, with dates, venues and the promoter's name for each.
- Your medals, UWW ranking history and national team record.
- For a coaching role: the offer, the duties and how your competitive career relates to them.
- For a coach traveling with you: role, years together and who pays them.
- Your passport country, so travel restrictions are checked before a card is booked.
