How long does it take to get a green card?
Applications for a green card on the grounds of kinship are not quick, but vary according to each situation and the information can be found in the Visa Bulletin. US immigration regulates green cards, making a limited amount available each year, except for immediate relatives of US citizens, such as fathers, mothers, spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21. For these, the processing time varies from 12 to 18 months.
For other categories, it is necessary to consult the Visa Bulletin, which provides information on visa availability and processing times. For example, in November 2020, the estimated deadlines were:
- Unmarried children over 21 of American citizens: 5 to 7 years;
- Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of permanent residents: 1 to 2 years;
- Unmarried children over 21 of permanent residents: 4 to 6 years;
- Married children of American citizens: 10 to 12 years;
- Siblings of permanent residents: 12 to 14 years old.
Remember that the waiting time depends on the ratio between the number of visas available and the applications received.

In order to obtain a green card in the United States through kinship, the beneficiary must go through a process that includes a medical examination and a consular interview. The medical examination is conducted by a designated health provider and covers physical assessments, laboratory tests and immunization checks. The results are sent directly to the consulate. The consular interview is scheduled after the application has been approved and involves questions about eligibility and document verification. Based on the interview, the consular officer decides whether to approve the immigrant visa. If approved, the beneficiary receives information about arriving in the USA and the subsequent process for obtaining a green card.
