If you came to Bethesda on a J-1 or an H-1B attached to a research post — at the NIH, at one of the biomedical employers near it, or at an international institution along Wisconsin Avenue — your route to permanent residence starts somewhere different from a family case, and it has more moving parts.
Why a research route is more complicated
A family-based adjustment turns on a relationship. A research-based one turns on a sequence — the underlying petition, the category, and whether your current status permits adjustment at all.
Two issues decide most research-route cases:
- The J-1 two-year home residency requirement. Many exchange visitors in medical and research programs are subject to it, and where it applies it blocks adjustment until it is satisfied or waived. Whether it applies depends on funding, field, and your home country's skills list.
- Timing against the underlying petition. Where the green card route runs through an employer or a national-interest petition, the adjustment application is the last step, not the first, and filing out of sequence wastes both the fee and the wait.

Where it happens
- Your interview office is assigned by ZIP code — the USCIS Office Locator gives the current answer.
- Biometrics for Maryland applicants are usually taken at the Baltimore Application Support Center.
- Maryland's immigration courts are in Baltimore and Hyattsville (EOIR listing).
Bethesda is on the Metro Red Line, which makes the Washington-side appointments straightforward and the Baltimore ones a drive.

Government fees
Adjustment of status carries several government filing fees, and they change. Confirm current amounts on the USCIS Fee Schedule (Form G-1055) or the USCIS Fee Calculator.
